Chintaphu Winter Trek: Bright Days, Cosy Homestays & Himalayan Views
We wrapped up our last project of 2025 precisely the way we love to end a year. On a trail, in the mountains, and in the company of genuinely warm people.
This was our Chintaphu Trek Christmas–New Year edition, curated for a wonderful father–son duo who wanted their holiday to feel authentic, quiet villages, long walks, clean winter light, and a New Year’s Eve far away from noise and crowds.
Our journey began at Bagdogra Airport, and by evening, we were already in the hills, spending our first night in Joubari. It’s the kind of village where you sleep early, wake up to crisp air, and realise your mind has already slowed down. From the next day onward, the trek eased into its natural rhythm, steady walking along peaceful village paths, through soft forest sections, and those little “tea stop” pauses that are almost non-negotiable in the Himalaya. These weren’t just breaks; they were moments of connection, smiles, stories, and warm cups that somehow taste better when you’ve earned them on foot.
And then came the views. Winter can be brutally cold here, but it can also be incredibly generous on clear days. We had sunlit stretches all across. From Joubari, we had stunning sightings of Kanchenjungha, and on the right openings, the distant giants, Everest and Lhotse, made their presence felt.
Evenings were for homestays, cosy rooms, simple comfort, and hosts who treat you like family. The food wasn’t “hotel-style”, and that was the best part. It was honest, hearty, and full of care, the kind of meals you remember long after the trek ends.
For wildlife and bird lovers, this trek offered quiet surprises too. We spotted Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, Rufous Sibia, Blue Whistling Thrush, Jungle Myna, Black Laughingthrush, Sunbirds, and the Kalij Pheasant, extraordinary flashes of colour and movement that made the forest walks even more special.
