Islands You’ll Discover
Kavaratti:
The capital of Lakshadweep is a paradise for marine life. You can swim in its tranquil lagoon, explore the marine aquarium, or simply relax on its powdery beaches. It is located 404 kilometres from Cochin and has served as the headquarters of the Union Territory Administration since 1964. Visitors have ample time to explore the island, which features a calm lagoon perfect for water sports, swimming, and lounging on warm sandy beaches. The new marine aquarium showcases an impressive collection of marine life specimens.
Kalpeni:
Kalpeni is renowned for its picturesque islets and coral storm banks, making it an excellent destination for reef walking and kayaking. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the lighthouse and the local Banyan Factory. Located 287 kilometres from Cochin, Kalpeni is celebrated for its scenic beauty. It features small islets such as Tilakkam and Pitti and the uninhabited island of Cheriyam to the north. A large, shallow lagoon encircles these islands.
A unique aspect of the Kalpeni Atoll is the extensive storm bank of coral debris along the eastern and southeastern shorelines. Visitors can enjoy activities such as swimming, reef walking, and various water sports on kayaks, sailboats, and pedal boats. The day’s itinerary also includes visiting the Banyan Factory and the lighthouse.
Minicoy:
Minicoy is the southernmost and second-largest island in Lakshadweep, 398 km from Cochin. This crescent-shaped island is approximately 10.6 km long and features one of the largest lagoons in the region. Viringili, a small islet, can be seen south of Minicoy.
Minicoy stands out from the northern group of islands due to its unique culture, which is influenced by Maldivian traditions. The island is home to one of the oldest lighthouses, constructed in 1885, a popular attraction for visitors.
While exploring the island, you can visit the local villages and the tuna canning factory and take a scenic drive through dense coconut groves along winding village roads. The beaches have bathing huts and changing rooms, making it easy to enjoy swimming, beach walking, pedal boating, kayaking, and sailing.
