Meet Thami: Sherpas—the Face and Backbone of Himalayan Treks
A nation that is firmly rooted in community consists of individuals who dedicate themselves to serving all who cross their paths. These individuals are often referred to as Sherpas or Porters, with the term used depending on their specific profession. Some carry loads, and guests may simply call them porters, unaware of their proper titles. Among them, some are more experienced and skilled in navigating high-altitude conditions. These professionals guide guests on trails that lead from foothills to high mountains and are known as high-altitude guides.
But the fact is, they have names too. The man photographed in this image is Thami. I fondly called him Thami Bhai (Thami Brother). They have stories to tell, not just to serve their guests.
These people, people like Thami, are actually strong men. They are good-looking, smart, stylish, open-minded and true to their heart. They are the epitome of care and kindness. They never forget to laugh, even in the odds. During our trek, when Thami laughed, his laughter echoed along the mountain walls on the horizon; it wafted through the pine woods and blended with nature’s magical sounds.
People like Thami never forget their duty, even in the darkest nights or in the cold, frozen morning. Their first smile in the morning greets you in the mountains and lets you feel that you are in safe hands, well-protected, cared for, and loved.
I am incredibly proud and privileged to work with these people, people like Thami Brother.
Once, I told someone that ‘Travel With Susmita’ is my creative freedom. Yes, but now I feel it is more than just creative freedom; it is about allowing me to meet unique personalities, those who are shaping my journey and shaping the strong, bright future of ‘Travel With Susmita’. The incredible journey of ‘Travel With Susmita’ has reached a point where we are now creating opportunities for others. Our contribution is not much, but it still counts in someone’s life. We understand that empowering others also amplifies our own empowerment.
We are part of someone else’s life, like Thami Bhai. We are part of their life story and their laughter, love, and emotions. The greatest achievements so far for ‘Travel With Susmita’ and for my personal journey, too.
The journey of a big dream starts with a small step, and I am counting each of our steps.
Our road to moving forward is not easy, but it is interesting.
It is interesting because we have the pleasure of meeting and having people like Thami Bhai. They made our journey meaningful, truly joyous and prosperous. Many stories are in creation and awaiting to be unfolded. Let’s hold on to our faith and good work, and let’s believe in our core belief that travel can transform. Travel is meant to expand boundaries and create a unified world where everyone can live peacefully, where humanity stands tall above differences. Can we make that happen?
